Intermittent Wiper Help

Post by psychonaut »

Evening all - i need some help with my wipers. I have an x-reg (81/82) van, with a 1900 diesel. It is one of the earlier vans fitted with ceramic fuses and very few relays, so it is not a simple case of inserting the relay in the relay holder and removing the stop on the steering column.

I've referred to the excellent guide on the wiki here, and followed the instructions to the letter. However, whilst i still have normal and fast wipers, i do not have intermiitent wipers. I have checked and re-checked my wiring and i am confident i have spliced and connected everything correctly. I often, but not always, get a buzzer sounding (high temperature buzzer?) when i push the stalk down for intermittent wipers. The wiring starts to get very hot when the buzzer sounds, suggesting a short somewhere in the system.

A couple of other things to note: -

1) The windscreen wash doesn't work off the stalk (by pulling it towards you), but by a seperate toggle switch on the dash. A previous owner has likely had problems with it and rewired the pump into this switch rather than the stalk. This might support the theory of a short in the wiring somewhere in the dash. Would not having the pump feed wired into the relay (and earthed appropriately behind the fusebox) affect the operation of the intermittent wiper function?

2) I have tried 3 different relays, just to eliminate the possibility that a relay was at fault.

Before i start pulling the dash apart to look for something wrong with the wiring behind it, can anyone offer any other pointers or sage words of advice?

Ta :D

The remote washer switch may be the problem. Intermittent wipers have wash wipe facility when you operate the washers it sweeps the wipers as well.
