engine swap!

Post by isneil »

Hi all, i've just got a 1990 t25 camper. 1.6 diesel, think its original.I want to put a bigger engine in it, also diesel. What is the most straightforward, easiest, needs as little changing as possible alternative? ive heard a 1.9d will go straight in with nothing else doing, is this true? seems too straightforward to me. i am not mechanically capable so will be getting someeone else to do the work, but would appreciate your advice so i dont get led down unneccesarily expensive routes. cheers guys

hi isneil and welcome to the club. i have done the swap as have many on here and i can only speak for myself but its brought my van up to a much more acceptable driving experiance.that feeling you get when you hit a long steady hill and its revs start to drop with your foot on the floor as you reach for the stick will be no more but dont expect to be driving a ferrari coz that it aint.
yes its a straight swap apart from loads of bits you need to take off your old engine to make it compatable with the slanted style of the t25 diesel set up and you will need at minimum an oil change and oil filter and a bearing that goes into the end of the crank.
the engine you want to be looking for is a 1Y and they can be found in golfs and seats from around 1993-1998 .ring round the scrapyards, look on ebay, put a wanted ad on here or the brickyard forum and when you decide that you want to do it come back on here and ask loads of questions if you need to,theres a load of folk that can help you :ok

oh forgot to add ..this will cost you from 150-300 quid for the engine and 5 quid for the bearing and what ever the oil and filter costs.if you have a mate to help you you can do it between yourselves with our help if its needed
