Electrical woes

Post by popide »

Hi just registered as full van owning member of club 80-90! Sorry that my first post has to be a duff one but i'm a bit stuck. :( Van would'nt start after heavy rain on the weekend. Found that no spark was getting to plugs. Also found that the plug that fits into the side of the dizzy had a damaged wire, fixed that and plugged it back in(not sure if i disconnected battery first). Turned engine over, still would'nt fire. Tried to turn ignition off and engine kept spinning  even with the key out. Then engine stopped turning but starter kept going. Had to disconnect battery to stop the starter motor, negative lead was hot on the battery. I'm in over my head now and really need some advice/help. Any auto elecs out there/nearby? Can supply tea biccies and petrol money! Hope someone can help thanks james

Sounds like your ignition switch.
Have you checked for 12V at the coil?

The story so far.......

Post by popide »

Got the van running at last :) sounded soooooooooo good after a couple of weeks since purchase of nowt :D Was'nt getting power to coil but getting power to electrics box in engine bay. Ran wire from live to coil to power it up turned engine over and hey presto she fired up! Took wire off and replaced everything as standard and van starts no problem.
Any ideas what the problem could have been as I would like to sort this out so as not to get stuck again?
Anyone know what the click noise is when the ignition is turned on, seems to be coming from somewhere down behind the carb??? Was'nt there b4!
May get to Bus Types (It's only 2 miles up the road) yet.

Anti run on valve!
Cuts the fuel to the engine.

Thanks for the replies. Any idea what the problem could have been in the first place? Think van may have stood for a bit. james

She / he was testing you to see how dedicated an owner you would be....you obvioulsy said the right supportive things and passed!!!

Have fun in your van!

And keep on saying nurturing, supportive things - I apologise to mine every time I go out in the other van!
