Hesitation under acceleration - 2.0 A/C

Post by javawolf »

Any ideas? I have a really frustrating problem on my Westie (2.0 CU standard setup). Runs fine, idles fine etc apart from under acceleration the van is lumpy and feels like it is hesitating. It does get there but it just does not feel right. Starts a about 1/2 throttle or when under load.

I have had compression test done and was ok and all valve adjustment was checked by a local garage. Dizzy seems ok, vac unit is air tight I have replaced coil and all ignition leads and plugs. I am thinking the carbs could be worn? The van passed the MOT with no issues.

Any fresh ideas would be good.

Possible leak in air intake, sticky advance mechanism.

Could be fuel starvation, check your filters and possibly the fuel pump. Or maybe sh*t in the carb.

Good luck :ok

Thanks, the fuel filter was changed recently as I have had fuel starvation before but when I had that the engine would die and you would have to wait a few mins to get it going again. I am going to put an air line across the carbs to clean out the crud. I think i will also have a look at the dizzy to check for sticky advance. Can you get kits to overhaul the dizzy as I understand you can not get them anymore new.

Thanks again.

My '80 Aircooled has 2 filters in the engine bay and one in the fuel line just behind the tank.
Dont know of a service kit for the dizzy. The vacuum advance can be checked by sucking on the pipe. The revs should change.

Just looked in my fault diagnosis file and it says :-

Lack of power

Ignition and/or fuel system faults Check the ignition and fuel systemsfor correct ignition timing and carb settings.

Incorrect valve clearances Check and reset clearances.
burnt out valves Remove cylinder heads and examine and overhaul as necessary.

Worn out pistons or cylinder bores Remove cylinder heads and examine pistons and cylinder bores. overhaul as necessary.

Obviously start at the top and work down till you solve the prob it says.
Copied out of my Fault diagnosis file, think that bits from the Haynes manual too.
Hope its nothing serious though. :ok
