Syncro Doka Subaru turbo

Post by wightsyncro »

About a year or so ago I bought my Syncro Doka with a smoky old 1.9td and ever since have had problems with the engine.
I recently picked up a cheap Impreza turbo with a good engine and im seriously considering the swap. So I thought I'd ask a few questions first.
Has anyone on here got a EJ20 turbo in a syncro?
How does it drive?
Im keen to use mine to tow a car on a trailer, has anyone tried this?
What kind of cruising speed, fuel economy and acceleration did you achieve?

Thankyou in advance for your help. Dan

Do you think that its to powerful then?
Did I see somebody running a 5 pot Audi diesel engine? Surely that would have as much torque?
Who's Aiden? (please forgive my ignorance, im not a regular and fairly new)

Impreza 2L engine too peaky and 200+ bhp... if you wound the boost down a bit (Forester turbo like... 160) ought to be better... but lots of heat to get rid of..
2.5 non turbo engine is a better bet..

Wouldn't the turbo be too near the fuel tank ?

Intresting point, do you have a 2.5 subaru engine in yours Andy?
What does it drive like?
Would you be comfortable towing a car with it?

That'd be great, a massive improvement on the diesel. I didnt even realize Subaru made such a big engine.

How about this as an option http://www.boxerdiesel.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not heard of anyone using the boxer for a VW conversion yet.

I think those motors use Canbus, which would make getting one into a T3 a major challenge. Same for the later petrols after 2001-ish if I remember right.

Wouldnt the system of engine management be stand alone once started?

Er, no. In a modern vehicle the ECU is linked to many other subsystems between which various dependencies exist. Canbus is a digital network. Separating the engine subsystem would require access to very sophisticated equipment and the Subaru microcode. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canbus.

So does that make it near impossible to put a boxer diesel into one of our vans Andy?
