horrible taste

Post by ricicles »

in the water pipes :? have just fitted second set of pipes to the van. i end up with a plasticy taste if the water sits in the pipes for more than a few mins. if i draw enough water through it clears. ie all the water that has sat in the pipe.(the water in the tank has no taste) what pipe do i need to use to stop this? i have purchased two different sets of pipe suitable for drinking water from caravan shops localy but they are both rubbish. what do i do?

Maybe flush the pipes through with something like puriclean or Milton? Thats what we use to flush ours through every so often. Might get rid of the taint in the pipes?

And tbh we don't ever use the water in the van for anything other than boiling for tea/coffee or for cooking. We buy bottled water for drinking.

cannot use it for making tea as the taste is so strong. tried puriclean to no avail. even the washing up cloths smell bad after using the water.

I think there must be some problem more than the new pipes themselves. I just bought piping from the local garden centre and have had no problem at all. I use the same tubing for beer making and have never had a problem with either. Are you buying clear plastic piping? Perhaps there is an issue somewhere else in the system. In addition to going through your new piping, where else does the water go? For starters, it has to go through the pump itself and the tap assemply at the other end. Could these be tainted? Are you really sure about your tank? Can you see inside it? My tank initially had a bit of a green deposit that I got rid of with bleach and lots and lots of flushing. I normally use sterilising solution used in home brewing which is excellent and leaves no flavours at all.

We know the tank is ok cos if we take the water from the drain tap we can make a nice cup of tea or have a nice glass of water. (We also flushed it through after using chlorine-based sterlising stuff - puriclean). Don't think it's the tap as it's more than just the first bit that tastes nasty. If we've had the tap on for long enough and all of the water standing in the pipe has been moved the taste goes, so don't think it's the pump either but it might be worth exploring further. Might just install beer brewing kit...

evening!

the pipes is the thick walled blue stuff? plasticy and shiney?

its normal to get a pipe taste off it for a while - how did you use the puriclean? it needs leaving in 24hours at least
and also always pump it out of the tank via the tap to well clean the pipes and joints and most importantly the pump.

When I worked away and often our brews would taste foul after sending the apprentice of to fill kettle it would be down to being filled from a normal hose pipe! Check that the hose you have is food grade and nothing else, bet thats why water is foul and yet from drain from tank is ok!

i too have this problem...water comes through cloudy initially then clears, but when boiled still tastes bad.. i run the standard devon water tank, and blue hose from rear to the front...will try running puriclean through the system.

Just a quicky... If you have an inline water filter these should be replaced every year. If not... You should get one! They do work. Should be placed after pump if possible but failing that as near to the tap as possible will do.
Also, if your pipes can let light into them ie. they are clear (or sort of clear!), then alge can grow inside them. However if they are clear at least you can see whats going on!
