ZIG UNITS & BATTERIES

Post by danthevan »

hello everyone,

i have a couple of questions regarding the zig unit of my campervan and its batteries. one question is about power coming only from the leisure battery. i can't switch to the vehicle battery if needed in an emergency (for instance when the leisure battery is flat).

and second question is about the leisure battery not being charged when the vehicle is moving and the switch set to 'touring'. it happened that my leisure battery got flat after leaving the fridge connected for 30 mins. to the 12v. after that it would only charge a very tiny bit but not enough to operate the electrics. i thought it to be due to the short trips while on holiday from one place to the other (maybe not enough time to give a good charge). but after coming back from our holiday and spending over 6 hours on the road, the battery didn't charge either. any ideas why?

thanks in advance for any replies.

regards,

dan

hiya

maybe wrong but im sure the zig doesnt actualy charge the lesuire battery its more of a "on site" for mains battery charger "

there should be a relay under drivers seat with some fuses and earth you checked these>?

fridge will kill battery on 12v it uses sooooooo much power

12v fridge mode is for when your on the move and the alternat or is avle to supply the extra drain the fridge is using

We were using the 12v mode for the fridge while going to Cornwall but stopped at the petrol station for 30 minutes and forgot to switch it off  Beginners mistake.

It says on the zig instructions that while switch set on 'touring' position, the leisure battery should get charged with engine running. It also says that I can switch from one battery to the other through the zig unit. None working.

I'll have a look at the fuses and relay....

Cheers

The Zig should link the starter battery to the Leisure battery via the 'touring' switch when selected. In this mode it also allows you to use the starter battey to power the leisure equipment. It sounds as though someone has either changed the wiring or more likely that the fuse from the starter battery that feeds the Zig may have ruptured. Check around the starter battery area for in line fuses. If it has blown it would explain why the leisure battery isn't chargimg and why you cant access it via the 'touring' switch. As already mentioned, the fridge should be powered via a relay that only operates when the engine is running.
