Whats all this then? Wires at the back of my radio

Post by italianjob »

morning all (again)

right then, second post following on from my dash mounted speaker post.
As i said, I've started the re-fit, so I tackled the easy job of removing the van radio to see whats going on - I've done this before on previous vehicles, so I know to expect a positive, a negative, the aerial and the speakers, but what the c#@ff is going on here then:
Aug09 007.jpg
The big connector block has the positive and negative - sorted. but what are the 2 blue wires coming into the same block right next to the supply cables :?: .
Also, next to the big block connector theres the smaller connector with 2 browns and a red - are these 2 negatives and a live.
Next along is the block connector for the dash mounted speaker = sorted.

Could it be that the 2 blue wires are old speaker wires :?:

Clearly all vehicles are different and you've got the added factor that somebody has buggered about with it before me, but any ideas folks?? I've just bought a multimeter, but I'm not too sure how I would use is to identify what these cables do ( or did).

Any6 advice would be greatfully recieved and digested.

Ta for now

hi there.
had the same issue with my radio wires.
some erk has used house lighting wire to fit the radio??.

the small connector was direct feed for radio.had new radio fitted by audio company(just happened the guyolwho came was vw fan).
he cut off above connector fitted new +aerial.
all works well but radio not connected to ignition.

wewlcome to the mystery world of t25/s(its like buying an old house?you never know whats under the wallpaper.

good luck

It looks like you got a positive and earth on both connectors, have you got a leisure battery?

the two grey/blue wires are lighting wires.
Brown are Neg, red is live

that looks like unbutchered standard wiring to me

there is no aux position on the key , so dont bother looking for a feed from the ignition other than when the key is in the run position.
the radio should be on the same fuse as the interior lights, so always live, key in or out.

be aware that some newer head units require a "l" shaped antenna connector ot fully fit into the dash, and taking the ashtray out will enable you to "curl" the loom under the head unit as you push it back.
Also be aware that the "memory back up" on some head units will drain your battery if the vehicle isnt used daily, so either a kill switch or connect to aux(leisure) battery is normal procedure
