Summer VW festival - Breakdown

Post by woodys »

1981

Air cooled

t 25

1970 cc

petrol

Just coming out of chalvington from the sussex volkswagen owners club and had my first break down :(

I've been experiening a missfire recently and changed the spark plugs and seemed to be much better, the 25 min journey there was fine, on the way home just 5 miles from leaving, the engine was struggling for power and was miss firing big time, i managed to pull over , rang the aa and the chap said it was a ht lead, he put he's one on and missfire stopped until i pulled way and my camper cut out all together - couldnt start it. got home put my old lead back on and started but only on 3 cylinders. AA said change the ht leads and should be ok but im not convinced its just the ht leads, surley the engine wouldnt cut out if it was just one ht lead??? - coil has a good spark and ignition pack - what ya think people ???? need the camper for work

Please help :)

have you checked the dizzy and rotor arm as well?

cracked, or lots of dust produces those symptons.

timing?

A couple of places I messed up doing a spark change:

1. I put the leads on in the wrong firing order (details of the correct order are on the WIKI)
2. the HT leads I got required the nipple of the plug removing to fit
3. I didn't set the plug gaps properly.

I'm probably stating massively obvious things, but I hope they help!
