Converting A Westy To Syncro: Any Tips? Advice?

Post by keeno »

Hi there. I am new to this forum, but have had a keen interest in Syncros for many years. I briefly owned a 16 inch Double Cab last year, however, it didn't fit the bill of being a good all-rounder. I presently have a T25 Westy and a badly rusted out Syncro panel van (beyond resto, trust me!). I am thinking of putting all of the Syncro running gear on to the Westy so that I can do some serious surf trips: Morocco etc.

Any advice, do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated. I have my own workshop and am time-served mechanic so spannering, welding, fabrication aren't a problem. Cheers!

Thanks guys! The link on Brickyard is very useful. Quite detailed and informative. Reckon it could well be a go in the near future!

What is the engine to be used, and what are the Syncro box and diff ratios... ?

You can definitely sort this out later, but worth reflecting on before you start.

Same with engine under-run protection (petrol/diesel different)

Just looked at the conversion on Brickyard. Now I'm confused. Congratulations but I thought Syncro's had beefed up frame etc etc and the 16" went beefeer again, so how is this possible? Or am I missing something??

Correct me if I'm wrong but i think the extra beefing up in the 16" is all in the body, the frame is the same on all bodies.
