Hi guys...
{1.6TD syncro. 46,000 miles, well looked after}
Over the past few weeks Ive been getting this grating sound coming from my drivetrain when theres power going through it (ie: when my foot is on the accelerator). Its most noticable in 4th gear but has started happening in 3rd now too. I see that theres 2 possibilities here, either A, its my gearbox giving grief, and that is worst case scenario cause syncro gearboxes are mad money! It could be just a case of needing to change the gearbox oil though. Possibility B is that its my CV joints. Repack and replace boots, jobs a good 'un. What do you guys reckon and where should I start looking? How can I test to see if it is my gearbox? Is replacing the oil difficult?

If that the case, chance sare its getting a bit late in the day already if you've got 'sycnro noises'
First check ALL of the bolts on ALL the CVJs are tight (that is not obvioulsy lose and coming out, if yu want a torque figure, 28-33 lb-ft, I use the latter with the 12 point splien drive ones. But just make sure you haven't got a screw loose, so to speak.
If they all OK then:-
Don't want to sound a bum note, but are these noises of the dry grindy type, and does the box change gear OK, any funnies when going into 3/4th. Get stuck in any gear?
To change oil, first make sure you can get level-plug out, 17mm hex female plug in right-hand/offside of box, middle way up, fwd of the driveshaft.
Whether it needs oil or not , draining it through a stocking or suchlike checking for bits, bronze swarf etc, might be educational (drain plug angles down and aft, under & fwd of bellhousing joint). Refill to about an 1" under level plug, using GL-4 80W-90 gear oil (not GL-5)
Check syncro website for quantities and proper specs, about 4.0 litres for a refillfrom memory, but its all on there (click Syncro Logo, top right and goto TechInfo) or staright there...

It is a sort of dry grinding sound but the gearchange is fine, its not getting stuck in gear, not hopping out and aside from the noise the van is driving perfectly! I think it may be coming from the side but Im going to recheck that tonight. If it is coming from the side, its not so bad cause its probably just the CVJ. Ill give you a call tomorrow Victor if thats ok? Thanks for your offer of help! Much appreciated!
