Gear change trouble

Hi have just changed my engine from 1600 to 1900. The gears where stiff prior to the change but now they are really stiff. Anybody have any ideas what might be causing this?? My van is a 1982 diesel with 4 speed box.

If you had to remove the gearbox to change the engine(not sure as I havn't done this before) but if so make sure you refitted the linkage support(gearbox end) towards the front end of the van and not the rear.
