overheating in norfolk

sorry to be a bother , i have had a look at other posts and worked out enough to keep me on the road, but on my way to my holiday destination i split a hose. as this is has happened before i gue4ss i need to pressure test and look at head gasket! but not on holiday. soif it does go horribly wrong for me, is there anyone local i can limp to in the north norfolk area.

the longer story is that i set off from leicester this afternoon,gingerly watching my guage, 2hrs in i stopped for a quick pit, left her running, pulled off then BANG! the hose split and blew steam, 1985 1.6 diesel by the way. repaired with gaffer tape filled up with water at next services,engine running and got to norwich un scathed! i took the little hose between filler bottle and washer bottle off so could see pressure cap was working.

I loose the computer tomorrow night so just trying to gain as much knowledge as poss, thank you to all that reply

Can come out to you if no body can suggest anywhere local to where you are...
Need a bit more info about what happened before to cause this... sounds like poss head gasket problem.. which could be a cracked head (not uncommon) so wont be a quick/cheap fix.. may be better to use AA etc to get you home.. but could just be lack of coolant and needs bleeding.. but driving with low coolant isnt good..

either loosen the presure cap, or undo a bleed screw, keep the water level topped up, you will be able to get home, its not far. As Si says, its either a bleeding issue (appparently diesels dont really need any bleeding) or a head issue.
Either way, keep the pressure off, and keep the coolant well topped up you should be fine, its not really a job you want to look at miles from home. Avoid letting it idle when not moving for ages.

Hope you are all well. I would limp home and give it to your usual mechanic. It will come back as good as new.
Maybe see if you can get a new set of hoses for him to fit. Didnt you say one had perished? If it has then id say its quite likely that its just leaking hose. Oh, and you prob know this, but try not to put cold water in a hot engine.

Take the engine out of your bug and stick it in.

thanks everyome, just found out the hose from expansion cap blocked so not relaseing pressure? hoping that was it, topped up and bled ready for journey to cromer watch this space back in a week , thanks to si got your no if i need it, and breackdown cover.

Thanks everyone, yeah I was staying at kelling heath, managed to limp in and parked up til monday when i was due to leave. phoned the breakdown and got a ride home. think we are looking at head gasket may as well check out coolant pump, and give si a ring as he seems to know what he is talking about.

It seems to have been faulty pressure cap, good place to start next time.
