1.9DG What do the heat exchangers do????

Hello all

well have owned my T25 for a few months have had a few probs along the way including a hot start problem and the van stinking of exhaust fumes.... now my question is what is the role of the heat exchagers on a 1.9dg engine?? I have had a look around underneath the van and there is som alloy ducting which has split near the heat exchanger Im wondering if this is contributiing to my on going probs especially the hot start prob,,,,,,
