Whilst driving a few days ago, i lost 1st and 2nd gear. Iv recently replaced the clutch myself so i thought that removing the linkage to do that job might of misaligned the linkage. So i had a play with the linkage today and managed to get all the gears...with the engine off. I chocked the front and jacked the back so that the back wheels were off the ground and 'drove it'. All the gears worked fine so went for a test drive. Got from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 then came to a roundabout...cant get 2nd. This gets me thinking its the gearbox because it worked whilst the wheels had no pressure on them. With engine on, got my mate to put it into gear 1 at the gearbox end whilst I had clutch down...gear one worked fine until i took it out of gear and tried to put it back into gear...this gets me thinking once again it my linkage because its possible to put it into gear from underneath. Properly confused with this one...anyone had a similar problem?..anyone got any idea?
Thanks Phil

Re: gearbox woes
hi mate,
they are strange things aren't they?
have you bled the hydraulics properly?
My best advice would be to speak to Aidan tomorrow - find a post by toomanytoys he has aidans contact details in his signature. Alternatively, find any post by aidan. his advice to me has always been spot on. I recently lost all the gears....was the spigot bearing.....my, that was a fun job.....NOT!
Good luck,
Em

Re: gearbox woes
Hi mate - just thinking again....why did you replace the clutch? It could be that the problem that you thought would be resolved by a clutch change was not - I thought I had a dragging clutch....but the reluctance to change gear was due to the dead spigot bearing which eventually collapsed with a huge grinding noise....was not pretty

Re: gearbox woes
Mmm.. sounds like either the clutch is dragging on the input shaft so not allowing the gears to mesh... (crunching???) Could be the spigot bearing in the end of the crank is collapsed.... or if not going in at all then the syncro hubs have cracked and are jaming up when there is a little load on them......

Re: gearbox woes
I feel a touch of spigot bearing swapping coming on
This is a biatcha of a job ! Gearbox out, clutch off, flywheel off ... and then the real fun starts.
Ian.

Re: gearbox woes
If you have to do it, get the special tool for removing the bearing first - slide hammer or bearing puller. We struggled for ages...then a motor mechanic friend came out, and was under the van and had it out in seconds.
No, not the easiest of jobs, and another pair of hands is useful. We didn't drop the engine, but had it supported as once you remove the box the engine moves a little. We watched out for the thermostat housing on the engine bay as advised, but had no probs there....lucky \i guess!
Before starting, check and clean the heads of ALL the drive shaft bolts - we had a mixture of star and allen drive. Took quite a while to get them all out with one gent on each wheel.
Its very satisfying doing it yourself.
