Re: running in new engine
I remember last time we had a question like this we had several conflicts of opinion. Some go a little over the top with suggestions of using running in oil and a new filter and changing it after 30 minutes, running the new filter and cheap normal oil for another 200-500 miles then dropping both again for yet another new filter and quality VAG 15W/40 mineral.
Well me....I would say 500-1000 miles on cheap Tesco or other brand and then change oil and filter for decent VW Quantum Blue/Castrol high mileage 15W/40 mineral (I'm assuming this is a petrol engine?) or Quantum Red for a Diesel.
As for actual driving....varied driving (low speed/higher speed) free rev but don't labour the engine (as in high gear with lots of throttle) restrict maximum rpm and cruising to 3500/55 for the first 500miles. These are rough guides but not far off.
Follow re-torque schedule as per manual (only if needed)
Reset manual tappet clearances (shims on a diesel/locking nut and adjuster on earlier air cooled at 1000miles) they do alter quite a bit in that first 1000miles.
Again this advise is for a full engine recon, if yours has just had head work/oil pump then it doesn't need the same running in (has it had new pistons/barrels/crank/bearings) these will need the above or similar running in schedule.

Re: running in new engine
should have made it a bit clearer engine is 2.0l Aircooled and has been all the way in to the cam
so is a full rebuild not that bothered about running in oil (well i am but it is far to expensive for me)
thanks for your reply Red Westie
