2.1 distributor question
Can anyone tell me if its ok to fit a distributor from a 2 ltr Aircooled to a 2.1 dj fuel injection?
What if anything would it do to the running of the 2.1?
If its not a good idea, does anyone know where I can find the correct one?
Thank a million....
all the best

Re: 2.1 distributor question
I'm pretty sure they have different power characteristics. You can use a 2.1 on a 1.9 but not an Aircooled.
Try a breakers ... Billy numbers or Mick nw_vw.

Re: 2.1 distributor question
although obviously the correct one would be ideal, I've been doing some work on a 2.0 Aircooled, and had to get the dist. to bits to repair a wire on the hall sender base plate, and thought it all looked identical to the dist. on my 2.1DJ to be honest. the cap has a different style of plug lead end fitting in it though, the caps may well be interchangeable. the 3 pin conn. block is identical on both. as is the hall sender/base plate. if it fits i can't see how it would not work ok, as basically a dist does exactly the same job on both engines. unless there is some physical difference in the offset of the drive slot, or diameter of the hole the dist body fits in which is very unlikely. what is up with your original one? is it beyond repair?

Some dizzies can be 'cut n' shut' as you say. Just avoid the 009's. Its also possible (midlands is great for this) to find a lathe guy to rebush and sort a dizzy for you. Loads up here work in their sheds - result of dying car industry.

Re: 2.1 distributor question
Thank you Ian, will give the numbers a go
Cheers Rob, tried that, just thought I'd plonk the request on to my techy question....
&answers
Wasser & Cov,thanks to you both, the problem appears to be the hall sender(interesting you say your repairing one Was,
I understood they couldnt be taken apart without wrecking them?)
In the meantime I will fit and time the 2.0lt one and see how it runs and have a go at dismantling the 2.1 one to check
for broken wire at the hall sender.
Many many thanks again, all of you
Cheers

Re: 2.1 distributor question
If it's a DJ it will bolt on and work, but not be 100% as it should be.
if it's a MV, it will work, but will do nasty things with the ECU.
Inside the dizzy there are "Bob weights", small weights and springs that are carefully calculated to get the ignition timing to advance 9start earlier) as the engine revs rise.
Similarly, there is a vacuum advance unit that is also set and calculated to give different amounts of vacuum ignition timing advance at different throttle positions.
So, answer to question is yes it will bolt on and work but the result is that the ingition timing advance mechanism will be all to pot and may cause drivability issues like flat spots or pinking.
It is better to repair your old dizzy of the correct type rather than fit the wrong one because in good old 80-90 fashion, because it's "cheap"

Re: 2.1 distributor question
Hi folks,
if anyone finds the part number for a 2l air cooled dizzy I would be interested. I have a donor 2.1 which came with a dizzy.I have had it 3 years and it goes like stink on the LPG.
Interestingly enough, someone who knows his vws asked why i had an Aircooled dizzy....thats what he thought it was. bear in mind its running on a carb, not the usual injection system
I would like to know if it is an aircoooled dizzy in there......

They both have 2 vacuum inlet/outlets .... whereas the 1.9 only has the carb side one.

Re: 2.1 distributor question
Just been through my box of parts... found another part number 0 237 024 005 seems this is another "DG" one listed on the only site I can find as 83-92 models (VW number 025 905 305 C) pehaps a "replacement" one?
Got another which I cant identify.. 0237 022 053 vw number 025 905 205 N...
