Repalcing front wheel bearings

Post by rikpal »

Got new front discs & need to put new bearings in, can this be done by a keen amateur or better to go to a garage?, haynes talks about a pipe or socket to drift bearings in, Thats a big socket for the inner! Any advice as always greatfully accepted,

Also now slightly worried as I've just bought the bearings from gsf, only to see on a previous post that they are pants, are they so bad that I should take them back & get some others? also got brembo discs from there, any comments?

Promise to search forum before purchases next time.

I've got a feeling I used the 46mm socket usually used for the rear hub nut. I used a 12mm brass rod as a punch to tap home the inner cone ... there's a channel to run the drift down.

Take them back .... Brickwerks is the way forward for these bearings.

Brembo brake discs are quality but GSF wheel bearings are apparently made from tin foil chocolate wrappers...I've had no experience with them myself but enough people have and say they are carp.

i fetted a pair or rear wheel bearing to my mk3 golf gti when i fitted the discs and pads( thought they sounded too cheap) didnt need new it was just easier than knocking out the original and into the new discs. any way both wheel bearing failed at almost exactly the sam time same day about 8000 miles later. the ones on the car were oringinal and had done 50k hapily. i wanted a good quality ones to replace. i got one genuine £26 gsf £6 quid. there is a difference. i now have a gsf on one side and a genuine one on the other just out of interest as a comparison.

but i would recommend not fitted gsf ones they are poo.

I did my rear ones as a complete novice (inner and outer). I used the old bearing and a bit of wood to bang the new ones in. Getting them out is nails.
