could be an alignment on the linkage/bush thing - did you seperate the linkage at the uj ?
otherwise check the boot is in place on the cup and ball and that cup is pushed fully upward before locking off the two m8s on the plate on the side of the box
at rest in neutral default position 3/4 plane is cup is upright and ball is fully out of box

right had a go at this today noticed the rear plate was at an angle about 15 degrees to the back is this right (think the holes have become slightly ovaled anyway ground down some washers to space it so it is more or less at right angles to the rod and seemed to change better 2nd being a bit sticky and pushed the ball up but instead of going in to first goes into 3rd am thinking maybe its out by a spline any ideas :? thanks in advance

Do you have Bentley manual Paul?
Page 34.21
34.21a

There is a diagram in there...

Think box in neutral (rear socket dead vertical , lever in neutral plane & upright, looking from rear into the detent box, the fork lug (r/h) ) should be just under an inch (23mm) from r/h (from rear view) gate plate. (adjust uprightness of lever and that 23mm gap using spline fore/afet & rotation adjustment)

Also, when in 1st, shift lever should have 15mm (min) clearance from heater pipe insulation

yep forgot about that section  will drag out the bentley and have a look and try again am still confused about the plate tho i take it it shouldn't be at an angle but perpendicular to the the selector shaft and bushing ?

As it's a floating bush in that plate, then a small angle shouldn't be that critical... though if its bent then straighten it.

But, its the fore-aft position of that support plate that can be wrong (and have big consequences). Have you got it the right side of the gbox lug?

If the lug on the gearbox is corroded badly so that the plate doesn't sit perpendicular to the rod then it might be worth fitting one of mr baxters saver plates - I have a preloved one in the draw I will bring to sp, does sound like it may be one spline out - if your dad's there get him to hold gear stick in 3/4 plane in neautral and you then undo the bolt on the join and pull the selector rod ball as far out of the box as possible and lock it off there

going in to gear now better than before but still stiff think its definately the plate possibly in combination with the spline. The ground down washers do seem to have an effect alright the plate can only fit on the front side of the gearbox lugs and it does seem to be the case that the holes are ovalled from wear may look to see if i can find something to line them with. will get down to the batcave tonight and look at it on monday as I'm off (the advantage of working weird and wonderful hours) the repair plate sounds like a good idea would appreciate it aidan thanks will let you know how i get on paul

Also, is the socket firmly locked to the shaft ? Sometimes the roll-pin wears the shaft or the socket allowing radial play. Sometimes the socket wears on the shaft, allowing fore-aft slop. You would need to hold the shaft very firmly to see if the socket can move at all under rotational or bending loads
