Hi everybody.
I've just bought one of these for my DG engined Caravelle. The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that this is an air-cooled exhaust system. That's because my Caravelle has an air-cooled system fitted.
My problem is that the manifolds, or rather only the offside (right hand) manifold, is rusted through.
Does anybody know where I can get either a new pair of these manifolds or a good used pair or just a good used offside one?

For the simple reason that they use similar flanges on their range of systems.....

You have the "early" exhaust system its not an "Aircooled" one as such.. the silecer box is the same as the 2L Aircooled but the headers are WBX only...
Turbo thomas does a replacement set of headers in stainless steel that are direct replacements for the stock "early" exhaust these also allow you to use the standard oil filter too...
Just Kampers and prob GSF do the header pipes too in plain steel....
I had to replace the headers on my 1985 DG engine because the flanges at the head were rotted away. I had the job done at my local garage, the cost of the pipes were:-
VW277D Front pipe £40.33
VW276E Front pipe £78.11
VW278C Centre pipe £68.98
VW279B Centre pipe £68.36
VWK64 Fitting kit £19.60
RTG1 Exhaust gaskets (4) £7.98
The total bill was for £476 this included an MOT @ £53.10 and £73.50 for labour.
I had a quote from Charlie Browns Tyres and Exhausts in Bridgwater:-
Fitted to my van and silencer £475.
Take away to fit myself £375
Hope this is of some help

Thanks for all that info guys. I'm sorry to hear that they're 'not the best', shall we say! I did have a suspicion about the quality when I saw the price but I'll give it a go. I'll either go for a pair of manifolds from JK or just get a piece of mild steel exhaust pipe the right size and replace the rotten bit. I suspected I may have to cut the rear valance although they didn't mention this on the website.
I'll keep you posted as to how it fares in terms of longevity!
Thanks again folks.
Brooky.
Longevity situation not looking good. System has now been in place for 3 days. All the paint has burnt off the pipework and is being replaced by rust as foretold by Shepster. Am planning to get some zinc-rich aerosol paint & some VHT black paint to paint over it.
Also recently noticed that the tailpipes are not parallel to one another and it has the fateful words 'MADE IN CHINA' stamped on end panel of one silencer. Oh great! Sounds rather nice though. Am looking forward to a titanic struggle to keep the bloody thing in one piece.
Perhaps it was misguided of me to expect something with EMPI stamped on it to be half decent. I understood EMPI to have a good name in VW circles. Perhaps they've sold out to the God of Globalization and turned to rat s**t?
