Low Coolant Sensor Wire

Post by captjon1959 »

I recently purchased an '84 Vanagon (Westfalia). The low coolant sensor that goes in the rear coolant tank has had the wire cut. Obviously someone didn't want the coolant light coming on or something. Does anyone know where this wire is supposed to connect so I can patch it back in? The wire is completely missing, so I have nothing to trace and I can't seem to find a photo or drawing that shows where it goes. Thanks.

If the wire has been cut then the coolant LED should be flashing, since it isn't I suspect that the coolant level control unit has been removed or disconnected. The level sensor has two connections, one to chassis (brown cable) and the other (blue/green) connects to the coolant level control unit. The wiring diagram for your year shows that there are 2 connection points from engine bay to dash. One is described a s a connector housing but doesn't say where it is located but probably in the engine bay. The other is behind the dash and probably close to the coolant level control unit (looks like a relay but actually contains an electronic circuit rather than switch contacts).

The circuit is identical to the one posted in this thread, only the locations of the connectors differ, also included is a description of the coolant circuit and how the main components function.

Thanks AngeloEvs! will search for wires similar to those you describe. If they just cut them off I should be able to find them in the engine compartment (somewhere). I will also look up front for the control unit. It seems that the previous owner (or his/her mechanic) liked to disable various sensors. For instance the oxygen sensor is disconnected (plug missing). Who knows what else I'll find. Thanks again - I am enjoying the challenge of working on these systems but do need some guidance.

I found the green and brown wires. They were cut from the sensor twisted together to send a false reading. They enter a plastic tube along with some other sensor wires. Thanks again.
