GTI Exhaust (Silencer) - Help needed

Post by timbosh »

Hi All,

I have a 1990 Westfalia that has had its engine swapped to a mk2 GTI 1.8 Digifant. One of the mountings on the the silencer has broken off where it has been welded to a bracket and now there's a large hole. I have a few questions regarding replacing it:

1. The code on the silencer is VW3503HF - I can't find anything that looks like it on JK, VW Heritage or the like. Does anyone recognise it by the photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/13429136@N ... 11/detail/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. I have read on the threads that typically a 1.6d silencer is used in this conversion, is there a technical reason for this or is it just that it's the one that fits? My silencer has flanges at either end, could I use the 1900 petrol one off the JK site
3. Given that the current bracket seems to have been welded, how would you suggest affixing a new silencer? Are there suitable hangers that I could use?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Regards

Tim

If a silencer is not easily avaialable, could you not get the bracket rewelded back onto the silencer and then the area around the bracket strengthened up as a last resort?

I would say someone who could weld would do all that work in circa 1 to 2 hours.
