Does anyone pay for storage for their Camper?

Post by binka »

Just wondering what to do with ours when it coems next week really. Its going to be too big to fit on the drive. We can't park it right outside our house as its a 20min waiting period. So options are to put it on the side street 2 doors down from us, but there is a rather rough pub at the end of the street and I'm worried about it getting damaged by idiots coming out the pub.

There is another quiet road a couple of minutes walk away that is wide enough to park it there, but I wouldn't be very close to it.

Or I can pay £25 a month to have it in a secure compound. But that adds up to a lot of money.

thats what i would do Binka....the cost of £25 per month is irrelevant to the cost if its gets nicked...which they do...peace of mind an all that :ok

You're right the cost will add up. However you need to weigh up the cost against knowing that the van you've searched so hard for will be safe and secure and won't be getting damaged. I also wonder whether having it stored in a secure compound would reduce your insurance premium??

secure compound.check how secure it is.last week my sis and her fella noticed their tin tent had been stolen from a "secure with cctv"compound.guess what.the cctv was turned off :roll:and the rozzers are not that interested either.they had not visited the site for a couple of months,so they are unsure as to when it was actually stolen.the gate has a combination lock on it so everyone who stores their van there knows the number..

Surely this is why you pay tons and tons in vehicle insurance? - I fell out with these kinda ideas when I had my Ducati and my insurance company thought it sensible I spend £300 on a bike alarm to save all of £40.00! errr nope!- I now adopt the attitude of if it gets nicked I would be upset but upside is I would be able to use the cash!
It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

Council don't do caravan storage.

Ths is the local, friendly farmer. A lot of them do it round here to get some extra money. He has said he'd put it under cover in a 3 sided barn, so not totally element proof but nearly.

Not sure but you may have to tell your insurance company where it is to be kept/parked!

How much "too big" is it for your drive, you might be surprised once you get used to parking it. It's been said before, but these vans do like to be driven & I expect you're more likely to take it out if it's right on your doorstep than having to plan getting to a storage compound. (and you will want to play with all the inside goodies and things when you get it).

It's always handy to be able to plug in your electric hookup at home too to cool your beer fridge overnight before a weekend away.....

I wouldn't book a space just yet, until you've at least had a go at fitting it on the drive, with a little manouvering you'll be amazed how many vehicles you can often fit on a "single car" driveway :D

Insurance could be a factor here though, it's worth double checking with them before you commit to anything, it might be a better deal to have it in storage, it might not be though.

Its not a standard drive, it used to be a concrete front yard that has a wall round it and a gateway at a funny angle, I'd need to be able to reverse at a 45 degree angle thru a gateway, avoidign a wall and my house into a small space. I can barely do it in a Yaris.

Oh and the storage is less than a minute walk from my house and I'd have a key to the gate - so no hassle.

Its just the money, if it was £10 a month I'd do it. But £300 a year is a lot.

That's a good idea. I'll ask but have a feeling he'll say no. The bloke came across like an excentric millionaire. He said he bought the cottage at the end of his drive when it came up for sale just 'cos he was fed up with people living there. He said it was a bit of a scrabble to find 150k in a week but he managed it. So I don't think he's desperate for the money. And he probably didn't get so rich by offering discounts.
