water pump leak on a 1.6d

Post by Therunner »

hello, can anyone please advise,
my friend has a bit of a water leak & it seems to be coming from just behind the pump pulley,
(before the actuall pump?)
i can feel a little bit of a broken rubber seal hanging down & there is lime scale around it.
i'm not really sure what it is exactly that needs replacing? it's so hard to see properly around all those pipes,
pulleys & oil!
many thanks

kay, thanks :) ,

can i assume it's the pump (looking at gsf) for the t25 1.6 diesel,
only, i know it's not the original engine, & the engine number's been
ground off.. may even be a 1700, (so i was told when i bought
it but i didn't believe it as there was no actual proof...)
so if it were say, a golf engine, would it still take the t25 pump?
& do they come with the o-ring?

kate

(& poo, just checked on gsf again & most pumps are for 85>!
hers is an 82 but it's possibly a later engine :? )

fun, thought we'd seen the back of that van for a while!
:D

If you use a compac mirror you will see a small hole underneath the pump which sits between the sealed bearing...this is where they normally leak and signals immenent failure so deffo needs changing...
The only 100% way of getting the correct replacement is to take your old one in for pattern. First check that they have ALL the obvious options in stock so you are not left in the lurch.
Water pumps usually come with the seal in the box but don't take this for granted....VW sell it seperately and so may other suppliers. You are also advised to buy a small tube of silicon sealer because even when the surface is cleaned on the engine it will undoubtedly have some degree of pitting etc which will benefit from an all round smear of sealant. Just be very careful not to snap any bolts.

only choice of 2 for all the diesels upto 99. vw pumps should come with 2 seal.
