Removing the dash light bulbs

Post by desmond »

Hi all,

This is a dumb question, but for the life of me I can't figure it out! I'm trying to replace the bulb above the fuel gauge on the dash. I have an 81 T25. I've taken the top panel off, managed to slide the white plastic housing for the bulb, but I can't seem to get the bulb out of the white plastic. I've tried everything short of breaking it and getting nowhere. It's not in the Haines manual either - I guess they figure it would be easy enough to figure out!

Has anyone ever had to replace theirs? Did they have trouble and could you talk me through it?!

Would appreciate any help.

If its the same as the later models you rotate the bulb holder (anti clockwise but any direction will do IIRC) and then pull it upwards and out!

not sure as they all seem to be similar wattage thats if you can find an alternative to fit. Some peeps have fitted UV LED strips, others converted to superbright LED's but requires a bit of modification and, whilst they give the desired result, puts some folks off. I use superbright green led's and more than happy with them compared to the standard filament bulbs but you cannot control the brightness as you can with the standard set-up (but sounds like you can't get enough anyway!).

Thanks AngeloEvs. I thought that was the case, but it was quite hard to twist and I didn't want to break it! In the end, a pair of Pliers did the trick. Any idea how to get the bulb out of the casing?! They don't make this too obvious :)

You replace the assembly, holder and bulb. Should get these from GSF, VW Agent or a local motorfactor possibly. Take one with you as they are probably used on a variety of vehicles. Have my old ones lying about somewhere and will never use them if your stuck!

If you want to fit your own LED's ... all you need to know is here on the WIKI

This includes a link to a very nice webpage where you can calculate the resistor size for any LED and voltage :D
