In search of power

Ok so I have an Aircooled 2L CU engine and I was wondering what are the options for getting more power.

I did a top end rebuild about 2 thousand miles ago and now am looking to see what are the options for more power as at even the sight of a hill the van loses speed very quickly

So what are my options and how much power gain will I realistically get?
New bigger carbs?
New Exhaust?


Let me know what you guys think

Put on type 4 short manifolds
twin Dellorto 40's
take it to gasure
then a rolling road for a rejet

it will never ever wipe the smile off you face.

did you re-place the heads? these are usually a bit warped just old age
short mainfolds - from state side tuning £70ish
twin dells - alfa guy or maybe alfa1750 can't remember ebay about £400ish
you will need to change the throttle linkage machine 7 - £70
rolling road Raceshack £250

you may also need an electric fuel pumup if you dont have one and a pressure regulator ( though I don't have a regulator)

expensive but amazing it won't ever be a rocket, but now mine rarely slows on hills cruise on the motorway and you can over take stuff, makes a great induction roar noise :ok

meant to say I'm told an exhaust won't make much difference, although would like one just to make more nice noise!

My dells run great with standard fuel pump and no regulator.
My manifolds are Type 4 'empi' ones (I know!) and fit under the engine lid with the centre bar ground out.
Its the best treat my van has ever had.

Yes I already have the electric fuel pump as the old one gave up the ghost a few years ago

No I did not replace the heads when I did the rebuild so that might be part of the problem. At the time I just wanted to get it back on the road, now having driven it for a few months I think I need more power. 50 -55 miles an hour just ain't cutting it for me.

What sort of power gain(bhp) should I expect to get it I did upgrade the carbs?

Hell thats just numbers...

cruising at 70 and never bothered with a hill ever again.

anyone got a link to the exact set of carbs I need. Just looked on ebay and there seems to be so many different kinds of twin dells

You need Dellorto drla cabs either 36 or 40mm
Just looked on ebay and found these,

Hopefully, none of the zillion screws etc aern't too seized. The manifolds shown are for an alpha (he's even put them at the wrong end!)so you need new Type 4 manifolds (drilled and tapped for the brake servo), and linkage, gaskets etc. The carbs would need new jets, chokes emulsion tubes and a carb service kit.

Another simpler option would be to contact either alpha1750 (he's got a webstore on american ebay) for a corrrectly jetted and refurbished set, or Jim at http://www.statesidetuning.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, he could sell you everything as a kit.

I have just recently (yesterday) moved to warrington.

If I did go for the twin dells I would take it to steve at gasure as I have used him a number of times and he has been great. Just got to convince the other half to stump up half of the cash
