Cam belt replacement?

Post by winston wolf »

Hi folks,
Nothing on the Wiki cambelt page for cambelts.... so....

Its been 4 years since I last changed a cambelt on a ky engine.
I recal that I did leave the silencer on.It was tight but possible?

I am going to change out the belt on my Jx project. Is it possible to replace the belt with the silencer still in place or have i lost the plot?LOL

From past experiance of replacing T25s cambelts is it not a case of enough space to undo the bottom pulley bolts and remove the pulley & cam cover between silencer.Removing the silencer may be neccesary if you want to turn the engine over using the bottom cog bolt with a bar&socket ( after the cam belt has been replaced to tension) .Its straight forward job removing the silencer soak the bolts with WD40 before attempting.See if you can undo the bottom pulley bolts & turn the engine hand before removing the silencer.

Replacing tensioners AUTOMATICALLY with every cam belt change is a recent phenomenon (Last 15years)...thats not to say it isn't necessary but with low mileage as described I suggest you could use discretion. The tensioner is a sealed bearing and wears with mileage but not necessariliy age. As always...if in doubt go with the safest option.
