Is it possible to fit the original VW central locking system to an early van?

Sort of.
You won't be able to do your tailgate unless you either enlarge the hole for the lock or swap the tailgate for a later item as the hole for the CDL boot lock is bigger on late vans and CDL was only offered from '85 onwards when they changed the tailgate to one with a bigger hole in.
The boot lock mechanism is different for CDL and non CDL models.
Also, you may not be able to do the side loader as the lock mechanism has an extra lug on it for the CDL actuator to go on to, you may be able to bodge something, but bolt on, nope.
Not sure if early and late side door lock mechanisms are interchangable either.
Also, older models, and panel vans did not have the extra plate welded onto the inside of the door for the CDL actuator to mount to, this would have to be made.
Rest of it is quite easy, only requiring 3 wires to the actuators, drivers actuator has 5 from memory (It's been a while)
You need absolutley everything though, even on the front doors there are extra brackets needed, even the rod for the botton is different as this is where the actuator acts on.
Not impossible, bit more work than a late van.
If you just want the front doors then get one of the £30 universal kits, they aren't amazing but if fitted right work ok.

Hey, Thanks a lot for that. I did notice when replacing my early lock that the later had an extra ring on the bottom. Would be handy to know if these are interchangeable as a good early lock is not that easy to come by now, as most have worn to excess.
