Starter bush (not olite)

Post by Steve T »

Hi
For 1984 DG 1.9 Water Cooled (starter that has shaft supported in bell housing in olite bush)
Wonder if anyone can confirm part number (from vagcat site) 049911257A it is the bush from the rear of starter motor in the commutator end cover, the starter pictured is not the starter I have and can't find the right starter. Not sure if bush compatible with all, or specific to the motor. there is a little play / loose fit, don't think it should be. Not over concerned but thought I might get one in leisure and fit at a later date. Starter is working now I have dismantled, cleaned, checked, replaced olite bush (may have found a new way to get that out) cleaned earth points, mateing surfaces of starter / bell housing and battery terminals. Not sure what cured the slugish / non turning starter (high current loss when trying to turn) but it was all done as good measure to eliminate, to go on to find any other cause. (I suspected the switch).

Thanks in advance

Now to give a little info, not sure if this has been tried but the olite bush is a b**** to remove, I used a screwdriver with a good end and put it inside bush, pushed up at an angle, sharp edge bit into it at the bottom rear, edge of screwdriver touching top front of bush, turned and pulled in a twisting action winding it out bit by bit, it came out quite easy removing any burred / breaking bits as I went, ended up with 3 pieces. Any way result, new one went in nice on a long bolt with a nut backed up on it, jobs a goodun.

Kind of in the same ball park

would a recon unit have all the bushes replaced as a matter of course?.
This bush has reared it's head before.
How would one check that it's new?
ask the supplier?

use a thread tap to remove the bush, screw it in and when it buts up against the box it will screw the bush out.

much easier than any other method i`ve tried.

You'd hope that a full exchange unit has had everything possible replaced and would be good for many years but with your friendly local guy you have to agree what gets done - my guy will do an absolute minimum job or a to exchange quality job or an inbetween job depending on what I ask for. Units for sale are done to highest level as are ones to go on my van but he's done some cheaper jobs for projects or for poor customers who want it doing as cheap as and cross their fingers but for me it's like the gearboxes once you've got it stripped might as well do the job properly cos if you don't you are only going to be doing it again in the not too distant future.
