1991 headlight rocker switch

Post by tonytype25 »

My headlight rocker switch went kaput.Ive got a replacement , almost identical , except Its only got 6 connection terminals at the back instead of the 9 on my kaput one.I tried connecting the replacement up but it dosent operate my dimmed headlights or taillights.
Any ideas?

I got the replacement switch at a local breakers yard.I also tried my local v.w. main dealer but he said that switch was no longer available.

Do You have the headlight switch with dashlight dimmer dial and 9 connection terminals at the back?

Not sure about the 9 connector version as I have only seen them with 7 or 8 but it is possible to diassemble it if similar in terms of construction. Is it the action that has failed or is it that no contact is made when you flick the switch and have you confirmed the latter by testing with a multimeter? Does the section that holds the tags look to have bellied outwards from the main casing? Most problems can be cured by just cleaning the copper contacts or slightly extending the springs behind them. Hopefully you will get a new one but if you get desperate and do not want to modify the wiring to suit what is available, then see if you can find a good electrical engineer to pull it apart and refurb it.
