Heater Blower switch/motor burning smell

Post by hightower »

I'm really starting to hate my van at the moment.

Last week i had the problem with the brake calipers, which i changed with the pads, then the brake warning light came on and is still on after our 260 mile round trip to Newquay.

Then on the way the old starter motor fault reared its head again leaving me stranded in a layby for 5 mins after my mates had already pulled off.

Then yesterday at the campsite i noticed that all but 3 of the rivets that hold the top hinge to the front of the poptop had come away.

And today we get stuck in a traffic jam on the A30 near Bodmin with the sun blarring down on us the temp needle starts to go up so i thought i would open the windows and put the heater blower on to help take some of the temperture out of the engine and all was fine for about 20 mins then i had a horrible electrical burning smell blasting at me, i turned the fan off (which was very stiff) but still had the burning smell and was just waiting for smoke to start pouring out of the dash. Luckily no smoke came out but when i got home i couldnt turn the fan back on, i've taken the switch out and its melted itself together but i think the the fan/blower has done the same due to the smell and also tested the switch cabling with my multimeter and couldn't get the blower to work, i see from the haynes manual that to get to the blower motor its a dash out job.

and (yes not finished yet) i also found my horn had stopped working and when i checked it the horn was too hot to touch :?

So anyway i have found a replacement switch on JK for £5 but where do i find a blower/fan motor?

My heater blower's dead too. I have been trying to find a whole day free, so I can do the dash job, for about a year. When I finally get round to it, I reckon I'll cut a large hole in it... not sure exactly where yet tho... (suggestions anybody?) and screw a blanking panel over it, to provide easier access in future.

Might also put in a couple of smaller blanking panels along the main bit for easy fitting of auxillary switches, etc. Actually, shame to waste a good chunk of dash, assuming I can cut it out neatly, just need a hinge and a catch, to turn it into a door (and possibly some sort of frame/edging to hide the cut)...

He! He!
When you find a spare day to do this, you won't want to cut a hole THAT big in your dash to access the fan... The whole air distribution assembly has to come out to get to it and that fat lump of plastic is a bit bigger than just a 'hole'! :D

eeek! must admit from reading the wiki it does sound like a big job. So "plan b" might be better... as some other peeps have suggested on here run a thin metal pipe down to the fan motor for dropping oil into it occasionally, so it doesn't seize again...

I took mine out last year and was dreading it. In he event it wasn't too bad aannd although some of it was repairable I thought it best to pay out for a new motor. It now works well although it can't hold a candle to my Mondeo heater in terms of response and controllability.(Or is that SWMBO's wildly eratic whole body temperature sensing system up to its usual tricks!) I have to say I am not impressed with the amount of effort needed to maintain the damned thing. But then again it has probably been lurking in there for the full 20 Years.
