Just bumping this thread up a bit :D
Ok guys and gals still cant get it going!
Changed the bush in the nose of the starter got jump leads on it tried a wee bit of easi start ( I know its evil stuff) and nothing. Just to reiterate the van was going well before I left it over winter :shock:
6 years ago I had the alternator, starter,glo plugs injectors all changed repaired and a new batt.
Its smoking but just wont start very close but just wont fire. As mentioned the last time this happened 6 years ago I went through all the things above finally having the starter reconned and it started. Starter motor again then?
Is there anything else in the starter that can impede the speed it turns over?
I guess the way to check is to give it a tow...if it starts its the starter again.
Otherwise I'm thinking glo plugs (got 12.9v to them) or fuel blocakage/air or timing /pump which I aint gonna mess with.
Best way to check glow plugs....?

Six years, yeah could well be starter. Winters kill them off. I used to be a mobile Aircooled mechanic (before changing to cleaner work) and replaced loads of starters and batteries either during or just after the winter. One way is swap for known good one from a mate. Often saves a lot of time diagnosing.

Well if it's smoking from the exhaust when you crank it the air in the cylinder is not getting hot enough to ignite the fuel. 12v to the glow plug only tells you the are getting power not if they are working, you need to check the amps draw each glow plug draws around 10 amps, four glow plugs working = 40 amps three working 30 amps etc. If the glow plugs are working correctly the oil may have drained from around the piston rings during an extended lay up and caused low compression which a tow start is the best way of getting it going.

Amps draw is a great suggestion.... got a meter but not the greatest electirkery wizard how do I test the draw?
Sorry to be a dullard not totally thick but not done that before.

You need a heavy duty meter to measure glow plug amps draw most multimeters can only manage 10 or 20 amps these are the best they just clip around the cable and measure the current.

Ok done the glow plugs and the air filter (af needed doing un related) and she still wont start.
Before I spend £80+ on a recon anything else I could have missed?
Got power to the glow plugs/ fuse ok cleaned the earths batt ok was runnnig great until left.

it's probably the contacts in the cap of the solenoid worn or cable to motor and corroded can't pass the necessary oomph to the motor.
If GSF can't help then I have recon diesel starter in stock £100, but apparantly there's some new ones on ebay for like £60 - there was a thread on brickwerks a couple of weeks about them, on wanted I think by mannlicher
