on the clutch cover attached to the fly wheel and the indicator is on the inside of the bellhousing, 2pm position looking forward there's a hole which should have a bung in, but rarely does

You need to take care timing these engine read up a good manual .Do not attempt to start the engine turn the engine over by hand first checking there is no valve interference to piston due to incorrect timing.

Thanks Camper, he did turn by hand first, has managed to adjust to some extent but she is still blacksmoking and loosing power, not as bad, but still not quite right. Can't see where notches are to line up properly (I am the middle 'man' by the way, young chap doing this job for me is not mechanic, but has worked on all types of lorries, cars and tractors and keeps other vehicles going for us) but we apreciate you all taking the time to help

Did you remove the cam cover & loosen the cam sprocket & at TDC (V notch + pointer lined to it) This can be seen through the bung hole as discribed by Aidan.Cam lobes 1 & 4 at TDC should be pointing 10.am 2.pm slide a setting plate in the slot rear of camshaft.Pump sprocket is locked with a insert pin replace cambelt via its tensioner around all sprockets retension belt & tighten the cam sprocket bolt.Make sure the bottom crank shaft cog keeps at TDC whilst replacing the cam belt .There are specific tools for VW setting the timing the fuel pump sprocket can be locked but a DTI gauge is used for adjustment.
