Refurb Solex's or new carbs??

CU is getting on a bit now (95K) and carbs keep running very rich (more soot on sparkies than up my chimney!!)

So question is...

Do I get new pair of carbs? and if so best suggestions

or

Arrange a visit to someone like Gasure and get the Solex's refurbed?

My head is going round and round (and I haven't started on the beer yet), so any suggestions/ideas would be very greatly appreciated. :ok

In my mind you have two options.
Buy and fit twin Dellorto drla's. Lots of money but your performance will improve.
Or refurb carbs at Gasure. Mine were completely knackered and Steve did mine a few years ago, the transformation was incredible and I thoroughly recommend him.
If you go down the Dellorto route, a session on a rolling road will get the best out of them. I've now rebuilt some dellortos and am booked in at Raceshack this thursday. I cant wait!

I am not looking for more performance, (really) but just getting them refurbed would improve things no doubt. Just did a google for the dellorto's and have had to climb up off the floor to type.

I think the gasure route might be the answer. I will also invest in new pipework for the exploding stuff and I am about to drop the tank to check that over, so busy weekend.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with my CU motor.Done 108000 from new on original motor.Every year have had to "tweak" the mixture to get it through MOT emissions as it was running very rich.Carbs where replaced by past owner and have only done 5000 miles or so.Checked them and spindles are not worn and are in good order.
I bit the bullet this year and have had refurbished heads fitted and new rings as compression was down on 2 cylinders.No more advice notes on MOT regarding emissions.Hurrah!
What a transformation! Much better running,better mpg and so much nicer to drive.
Worth checking compression and maybe "decoke" of valves as running rich may not be solely the fault of the carbs.
Hope you sort it cheaply!
Would love some new dellortos but budget won`t stretch!

I think I might have to find a mechanic near us who really knows about the Aircooled to have a good look over the whole shabang.

Anyway after being layed up for 4 months having been sorn'd, took it out for a good run today (starts first time). After an initial 5 or so miles with a can of nails in a tumble dryer for an engine note, it felt so good to hear it finally settle down as the oil got around the tappets and then the heart sang and the grin widened. Don't they just get to yer?. Or am I just slightly mad??

Nope not mad!
I fully accept air cooled motors are not for every-one,but when they run right it is almost as if they talk to you.
Bought up on air cooled beetles, 2cv`s old Ducatis and still have my 1977 Guzzi LeMans motorbike air cooled "tractor"that it is!
I take the view that I will balance high mpg,slower cruising speed(and poor winter heating) for having no cooling system to go wrong and as the van does not get used much over winter I do not have to worry about antifreeze,rads,water pumps etc etc.
What is most important is that water-ever van/engine combination you have it suits you and you get maximum enjoyment from it!
