no brakes!!!!
just been for a quick test drive with the new engine & now it has twin carbs there
was nowhere for the servo to go..
doh, i don't know what to do, i don't really understand how the vacuum affects the brakes
anyway, will it improve them in the slightest if i just plug up the servo? no?

Re: no brakes!!!!
No...!
The servo requires a vaccuum to operate. I had this problem too when I put on webers. I simply drilled and tapped a hole in one of the inlet manifolds to take a threaded compressed air hose fitting (the one with a thread on one end and a barbed non-slip hose fitting on other end.) Make sure it's made of metal though, anything else ie. plastic or nylon, could melt.
An example here (more than you need though!):- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VARIOUS-SIZED-AIR ... QQihZ022QQ
The ones in the bottom left hand corner of the piccy are what you need.
The manifold will have to come off for this though as you don't want to get any stray bits of metal dropping in.

Re: no brakes!!!!
If you had a fuel return on old system and the new one doesn't, then just block off the original fuel return line and secure in engine bay or block off just outside tank for a neater job. If the new carb has fuel return just connect it to the old fuel return line to tank unless you didn't have a fuel return line, in which case just block off the return outlet on the carb with a small length of fuel hose, something to block the open end of the hose and a couple of fuel line clips to hold everything together.
Ps. You may have to read this at least twice to understand it... I had to and I wrote it!

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean? Like some sort of sealant?
and;

Are you saying that it would be better to tap into both manifolds? For better vacuum?
Cheers

Re: no brakes!!!!
I only tapped into one Melvin and it is fine. You don't get any more vaccuum, just more of it (if you see what I mean??!).
You don't need very much to operate the brake servo unit but if you find the brake pedal becomes a bit stiff or hard at any time after a lot of braking, then you could do as jason k says and tap into both sides for more airflow... Or lack of airflow as its a vaccuum!

Re: no brakes!!!!
oh pants! just picked up your PM and anow just found this thread!
I had the same issues with my van on the same carbs an ended up doing as VWCamperfan suggested and drilled/tapped an airhose fitting onto the left carb manifold.. if you want I can take a pic or 2?

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

Re: no brakes!!!!
Cheers, will do one for now, as we've only ordered the one part, but will bare in mind that we may need to do the other as well. Still have to find out if we're going to need to need to buy the correct size tap, a friend has 'a selection' that he's collected over the years, so fingers crossed.
Thanks again
PS: The engine sounds like a dream compared to the poor tired thing we used for a while
