Hello Men,
I am still here but work (its got to be done but very inconvenient) has stopped play for a bit but hope to get 1Y in and running this weekend.
Put all the bits from 1700 to 1Y including the windage trayTHEN back to reading up on here removed windage tray. Pity really as the rubber gasket looks really good. Dont know if anyone else does this but when taking the engine out I layed a bit of 4 X 2 across the engine bay and sat the trolley jack on this fully extended, then a rope over the jack plate and tied to the engine.........all bolts out then lower the jack and engine on the deck. Have been practising with photobucket and think I have cracked it so will posting a few more pics soon. Been looking at injection timing method and being a tinkerer for 40years it does not look that complicated to me.(http://www.vwdieselparts.com/injtim.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) I will have a go and report back. EASTER WEEKEND AND WE SHOULD BE AWAY IN A FIELD SOMEWHERE.

you go for it pete.i used the windage tray coz like you i thought it was a better bit of kit.its still on there now but ill sort it all out when i can.i dont think itll harm anything the sump bolts to bell housing bolts being out for a bit.
did you change the dip stick tube too while the sump was off? i got to do this too but itll be when i sort the sump out as its as tight as my wallet :D

Yes mate, the dipstick is a bit odd, I had a 10mm hole for the "new" 8mm dip tube to fit into. A mate turned me a nylon shouldered collar/ sleeve and seems a nice snug fit will just have to play with sump oil level later. Halfway through the tub of swarfega already !

Yup Dave, engine in and done the injection timing, brown trouser time, primed the pump, switched on....wait a bit, turned the key and couldn,t believe me luck. Definitely sounds like a diesel but runs very well and bought her upto temperature and no smoke. Done a little naughty as she is sorned and tried her around the block and well happy. That breakers yard I had trouble with are really nice honest people
Got a couple of rusty bits where I welded her last year to sort out and away we go. Will post all pics later this week as I find that harder than injection timing !
Don,t forget to wave everyone.

thats great news mate, when i did mine i was impressed at the extra oomphhh...its not ground breaking difference but its enough to stop the tail backs on hills..but mine was a 1.6 and honestly the engine was fine but it was too embarrassing for me..i dont go fast in my car but just to be able to keep up makes all the difference.
we took ours to the coast over the weekend and it was a pleasure to drive ...erm..apart from the cab noise when you get to about 60 mph..dunno if its supposed to be that loud coz ive never been in another t25 before..it sort of compares to using a hoover.unless the bearings need doing but it was definatley louder than the engine..could be the wind on the high top i suppose :?

anyway mate..happy motering :ok

Yes I dont know if the noise is just something we have to suffer. We have to raise our voices when we talk, I insulated all the gaps in the panels and it did make a difference. Have you got the snorkel type engine air intake, my original one was lined with hairfelt type lagging but that fell to bits and a lot of the noise comes from there. At least the wife gives up trying to comunicate and we have relaxing peacefull trips........but she makes up for it when we get there. We are off in a couple of weeks to a lovely little site not far from us, The Orchard, Whickham Market and you can have open fires (logs supplied) with a beer tent at weekends, shame really as I prefer a cup of tea!
Will report on noiseyness later.

How is the fir between the intake manifold and the body ? I thought it was too tight to go in without some metal bashing.

No mate, the snorkel type air intake had what I can only describe as a sock INSIDE it reinforced with wire mesh. I dont know if this is correct or something the previous owner did, it certainly did look a proper job anyway.
My new engine pics will be here tomorrow.
Cheers

I guess you took the intake from the KY and used it on the 1Y ? I was hoping you used the 1y intake and did all the homework for me.
If you want some more power, and aren't afraid of digging through your injection pump, build it up a with a 10 or 11mm head. You can can also get it to ramp up the internal timing with some tricks. Check out VWdiesel.net. I build mine with a 10 mm head and i'm sure i'm close to the power of a 1.6 TD without all the plumbing ,fitting problems of using a turbo.

mines like that too pete...but it lives in the shed now.
when i did the swap i took it all out to see if it had come a part and it had...it had snapped ,so now ive just got the air filter and the pipe that comes of it.gonna have to get it sorted sometime to see if it quietens it down a bit more with that box thingy back on.itsnot bad though when your cruising cos the engine noise seems to just turn to a hum in the back..its just when your putting load onto it ,it does the diesel thing.
