Rocker misery - part 2

Post by orangebooboobearcrew »

As per my last post on this, I was awaiting the new rocker studs ready to screw back into the head, then re-install the rocker assembly, etc.

Sounds easy enough, yeah? Wrong - not on my piece of s*!t van!

I can get screw the studs about 3/4 of the way in but don't seem to be able to get them in any further. This is on the left hand side of the engine and then the left hand side of the rocker assembly. (I did the right side last week and the studs went in easy but they are all the same size, genuine studs so why am I having so much trouble on the left side?).

I have tried spraying the thread on the head and the studs with Plusgas and WD40, doused both in 3-in-1 oil, covers the studs in copper slip then tried screwing in - all to no real success. I have managed to get the one on the right in now quite far but it still has about 2 'threads' to go before it is all the way in. I have only managed to achieve this by getting some grip pliers and painstakingly turning a fraction at a time. I can't seem to move it any more but that might be from the effort I've already put and me not being able to feel my hands anymore in the crappy weather. I have also tried the nipping 2 nuts together on the same thread but again go so far then hit a brick wall again.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how I might get these in?

Also, I had to split the old nuts off. These seem to be 8mm threads. This might sound stupid but can I use Nylok threads to replace them or will the heat generated in the rocker area damage these?

Finally, as the studs have been taken out completely and replaced, do I now need to ensure that I do re-set the tappets? Previous posts suggested that on the air-cooled, as the engine hasn't turned, there was no need to do this but if the studs haven't gone all the way in, I'm guessing the rocker assembly may be slightly moved and therefore the tappets may need resetting after all?

Thanks in advance for any comments / help.

Chris

You have 2 options with your rocker shaft studs, either run an M8 tap down each hole in the head or simply cut 10 mm off each stud so that they bottom fully against the head...

Heat proof Simmonds nuts will be OK to secure the rocker shafts, But to be sure I'd rather use good quality spring washers and standard nuts torqued up properly.

And as with any sort of repairs in this area the tappets will have to be re-set as a matter of course.

Hello - just a quick update.

Managed to get all studs in eventually. Got a mate to come around and he showed me how to use my grip pliers properly then it took 5 mins to screw all 4 in properly. That is after spending about 5 hours trying to do it my way - I'm such a 'div'! However, it's like everything, 'you don't know until ya learn'!

I just need to find out what replacement nuts to use on the rocker studs now, get hold of some and then hopefully can have a go at turning the engine over. I'm really frustrated now as van not been running for 3 weekends and now the weather seems to have turned, we want to get out and use it!!!

Thanks,

Chris

Done it!!!

All nuts on (correct originals) and torqued up correctly. New rocker gasket aslo fitted.

The managed to get new exchangers and exhaust on last night - only took me an hour.

After 4 long, painful and extremely stressful weeks - I was ready to fire the old girl up last night and see whether I had done everything properly. After a few minutes of trying - couldn't get it to fire so left it five mins and tried again - hey presto!!! She runs.....

Exhaust sounds sweet and no noticeable tappet knock (I didn't need to reset these in the end).

Got van booked in for MOT this afternoon so fingers crossed as we supposed to be going on hols to Cornwall next Thurs....

Thanks to everyone for your help and suppport...
