Wierd sound from the back of the van
Hi - I know this a bit of a long shot, but driving home from work and a wierd noise came from the back of the van. It sounded like something was rubbing/banging against the rear wheel. Only happened when the van was moving - not just ticking over. Stopped van checked the rear wheels - nothing loose/rubbing. Drove off and it started again. Then a weird smell and it stopped....I thought I must have just picked up some debris off the road.
However, today the noise came back and then went away again. I have looked at the van again but cant see anything loose. The problem is, it only happens when van is moving and so cant see what it is. Any ideas - useful suggestions - greatly appreciated.

Re: Wierd sound from the back of the van
Hi Ian,
Yeah - the noise does does speed up with the van. Its quite a horrible noise. Sort of a knocking/scraping sound. Not sure about the drums and heat. I guess I can take the wheels off and take a look. Is there any way to check without taking wheel/drum off?
Cheers C.

Does the hand brake work on that side ? It shouldn't be too hard to take the rear drom off and see if all the parts are in the right place ... you do have a Haynes don't you ?

have a crawl underneath and check the drive shaft bolts are not loose

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!

If it happens again, pull over, crawl underneath and move each driveshaft in and out (ie road wheel to gearbox). If noise doesn't resume when you pull off again, its probably worn or dry CV joints.

Yeah, I had a similar noise which turned out to be the adjuster locking spring lever jobby broken off and sticking between the drum and a shoe.

On a lighter note......unpack the kids....they give off bad odours and are noisy when the van is moving

When one of our CV joints started knocking it sounded like a hen clucking, was intermittant but there was no odd smells! Hope this helps!

It's the smell that makes me think brake linings

As an aside I had a front drum shoe lining come completely in my CF (Last one before disks) and must have ran it for month with this iritating occasional scraping noise!
Thats the trouble with bonded shoes over rivetted jobbies - You just never know if the man with the glue brush had a bad day at the office!

Re: Wierd sound from the back of the van
Apologies for the lack of a response, however as the weather has got better I have been busy doing other things. I have had a look at the brakes and they seem fine...So have taken the plunge and bought two CV joints and ripped out the drive shaft. It is in the shed as I write ready to go back in van. Tomorrow I will put it back in the van, ran out of light today. Quite a fiddly job I think!. Anyhow will let you know how I get on.
Oh yeah - wierd smell...still a mystery but I was giving a mate from work a lift home.....not pointing any fingers but it wasn't me!!!

Wear latex gloves. That grease is horrible to work with, difficult to get out of fingernails and clothing too. And watch the CV circlips - they ping off anywhere.

I think replacing all four CV joints would be a far better option !!! Better to do them all at once and knock that problem on the head once and for all.
