what clutch for AAZ conversion???

Post by Norm Birch »

Hi all,
am new to the forum, but am hoping a couple of u might be able help?

myself and a mechanic friend are in the middle of putting an AAZ engine (out of a 93 gtd golf from Estonia!!!) into my bus (86 syncro 1.6td JX), having done a partial recon to the engine, re seated valves, new belts and ground the manifold ports to the same size as the head etc, we're hoping to put the motor in this weekend.

all the info on here n wiki has been invaluable, but the one thing i can't find is info on what clutch to fit, i've read (on the old brickyard site a few years ago) that a 228mm clutch will fit, the 112hp flat 4 T25 has a 228mm, but was wondering if i should use one of these or something heavier duty as i'm going to have simmilar HPs (hoping to tweak the AAZ upto 100 - 110hp ish) but Loads more torque. would the clutch from say a 2.1 petrol syncro doka cope with the torque????

what has everybody else fitted? i also have a part No for a clutch cover plate - 074 141 025 b, think this is from a larger vw van, does this sound correct?

once all work is complete, i'll try n share on here wot we've learned along the way!

many thanks in anticipation,
cheers norm.

JX clutch is to weak. Waterleaker clutch won't fit diesels. You will need a 228mm diesel flywheel of a golf/passat etc, use the waterboxer centre disc and then a tdi pressure plate of a vr6 one if your planning on big power.

We Just use a JX clutch on the AAZ and kinda what Andysimpson said On TDI's
More is less, stay pure, stay poor.

JX clutch will only just hold a standard AAZ, any more power and it will slip.

The JX clutch will more than just hold the AAZ. It will also hold a slightly moded AAZ with no problems even on a syncro in the mud.
But if you like riding ure clutch it wont last as long as it should.

My AAZ 2wd van will not hold even with a 228mm clutch and tdi cover plate. Depends on if AAZ runs as it should, a well set up AAZ will kill a JX clutch very quickly. My syncro did a 2 day old 228mm disc with tdi cover plate at an event last year not cheapo parts either, geniune everything.

AAA well that must mean that all of the 30+ AAZ'ds we have fitted over the past 5 years could'nt have been running properly then. :(
