Post by TimL »

not really knowing anything about water cooler engines, my father just bought a 1989 water t25 it 67 thousand on the clock to me this sounds like new ( all my air coolers have been round the clock) is this a low milage? what the average life expectancy for a water cooled?

problem with these engines is if the heads start leaking water--this is an age not mileage thing--

Because of the risk (kiss of death etc.) I can say that with regular servicing ,a van I know of, has more than doubled that. by just using consumables.

Lucky to see them past 100,000 without rebuild of gaskets for heads. But the mechanicals will give a lot more with plenty of oil changes. Having rebuilt quite a few for the gaskets and fare less for serious probs. Needs 50/50 antifreeze to stop head bolts rusting but other wise good.

67 thou seems pretty good low mileage, mine have all been well over 100 thou.

It's not down to luck just care and attention to the coolant , if its changed when it supposed to be then head problems are greatly minimised.
