Van cutting out, all of a sudden...

Post by captaincalamityclam »

Van (t3 1.9 petrol) been running lovely , even did a 400 miles trip last weekend, all of a sudden just now, started to run jerky, then tick over at the traffic lights rough, then run really jerky, then completely cut out, jerk.....then run ok....we got home.
then get a whiff of petrol from the back end area.

Had the van checked for petrol leaks and fuel lines all perfect.

What is happening.

A bit of a needle in a haystack sort of thing to try to pin point your problem,,,,,,,After a check of the basic components in the engine bay if nothing is obvious then I'd be checking the in-line fuel filter ( located on the O/S of the fuel tank) if it has traces of water or particles of shyte , this may indicate the need for further investigation of the carburettor for similar bits of rubbish or water.

sounds to me its not fireing so maybe your points or distributer cap or leads or coild..but as i said im no expert and hopefully someone else will comment on here before too long...sorry i cant be any more help

first job tho take the distributer cap off and clean it inside..clean any furry stuff of the electrodes..make sure the pin at the top is moving in and out freely..they are usually spring loaded ,if not the rotor arm will be...clean that too and then look in the cap for any cracks...when you clean it see if it has any moisture in there too ...evrything clean and dry put it back together and see if its done it..if its cracked replace it too

Happened to me. Just like that !!! It was the rotor arm. Fitted the spare one I carry and carried on.They are rev limiter ones and relatively expensive. Worth a try.

Also check for tracking which is like a dark line on the inside of the distributor cap where spark is taking least line of resistance. Sometimes indicates that resistance is growing i.e. plugs are getting tired or poor leads. Mate of mine broke down in Piccadilly Circus. AA man drilled a hole in the distributor cap through the tracking. It worked. Not sure if it is on these distributor caps without looking but check the carbon stick on a spring in the top of the cap and ensure it is not worn away or not springy. It is always worth looking at your running engine in pitch darkness, you might be surprised how much stray electricity is wandering around from old components. You needed to know these things in the desert whem Rommel's Panzers were bearing down on you.

Proper service time .... all 3 filters, oil, plugs, leads, cap, arm ... check it all in the Haynes, a basis engine service costs less than £50 and will give you a known good point to start from. You only need a full job once a year and depending on mileage that may be it in the hole ... obviously the brakes etc will need periodic attention. If you can't diy then ask and someone local to you will recommend a garage to you.

Righto, just been out had a look...

Fuel Filter, seems ok, bit murky yellow, but no bits.

Dizzy cap inside no black lines metal bits look fine, clean

Rotor arm, the bit that strikes the metal bits in the dizzy cap has a burnt rough edge.

So I used a rubber to clean up the rotar arm end, squirted WD40 about the place, pulled of the plug leads and squirted WD40.

Just been out around the block a few times and all is perfect.

What should I do ?

Problem with rev limiter rotor arm was once I took a run at a steep hairpin in Wales once in bottom gear and the rev limiter started cutting out at the critical point. Scared the bejasus out of me. Didn't know about rev limiter rotors then and spent time looking for a non existent problem.
