4 speed to 5 speed help

hi there 4 speed just broke on my 2ltr a/c and i bought a 5 speed, mounted up the box ok but trying the front mount and the box seems too long to fit. Any help please???

You are correct the 4 to 5 speed change over is not a straight forward as you think, as well as the box mounting being different you will also find the gear linkage will also need replacing ./

yer i have the linkage but i cant seem to get the box past the crossmember to bolt it up

cranch are you the same cranch who had the multi coloured van.who camped with us at vanfest a few years ago..

thats me, currently all oily scratching round trying to fit this box, any ideas?

if i remember correctly, and i might not be, are the bell housings longer on a watercooled box than a Aircooled??

yer that could make sense, i was told my a reputable vw man it would work but i'm struggling . cheers

just measured it up, bell housing is the same, rear is longer, any ideas?

told ya i might not be remembering rightly.....
i have been party to mounting a Aircooled (DK) box in a water cooled, but not the other way round......

different fromt mounts

the Aircooled mounts different to the water cooled.
4 speed is longer than the 5 speed water cooled ones.

i would not like to say weather the engine sits further forward either.

the 5 speed is code ABN and is def longer, the only way i can see is moving the engine toward the rear about an inch

just tried it, engine is too far back, get a 4 speed??? surely there must be a way to do it

if it was me and defo in a different place, bolt up the gearbox mount first , jack up the engine then redeill the chassis to except the engine bar in a different place!

Have you got the 5 speed front mount attatched to the box or have you swapped the 4 speed onto it? The 5 speed front mount is shorter to allow for the box being longer.
