Dangerous thoughts...
Having dangerous thoughts....my 1981 a/c T25 is fine, but I do worry about parts - what will go next, and can I get what I need. It strikes me on the other hand that everything but everything is available for the type 2, and the replacement engines are dirt cheap compared to T25's - and there's more choice - from dodgey re-cons through to brand new souper douper Mexican engines. Now I know they rust more, and are smaller - but are they slower and more thirsty? I am tempted to go over to the other side, finances permitting. Any advice or thoughts against this? Yep, I know T25's are bigger and more comfortable already. But can you give me financial and ownership reasons why its better to stick with the wedgie come what may with the engine, which at 120,000 miles will surely die one day.

You can also get most parts if not all parts for a T25, just as cheaply, if not cheaper. And as yours is an Aircooled engine, you can replace it with any type 4 engine, which at the moment go for little money. There were a few for sale at Dubfreeze (2l CU engines) for around £200. The parts for type 4 engines are, in the main, readily available. The only thing i have struggled to find is the thermostat for a 1700 W code engine.
Currently I own both a bay and a wedge, both running on Type 4 engines, and i would say the bay costs alot more to keep on the road than the wedge. I would think if you have the money to buy a bay (more expensive than the wedge anyway) I would consider saving the money, and using it to buy a good replacement engine if and when yours fails, which it may not do for another 30,000 miles or so.

Your T3/T25 is a VW Type 2.

If there is a market, you will find someone to make parts.

Well, I would like to think that - my impression from Ebay and other markets is that prices are falling at the moment - I guess the recession and all that. I hope you are right tho'!

Well, I have. The T25 has far superior steering - the lack of power steering is rarely an issue, whereas T2's (sorry, "Bays", cos I have been corrected above that all Vw's are T2's) are very heavy and vague on the steering. On performance - there seemed no difference between a 1.6 a/c Bay and my 2.0 a/c. Both don't really like the world beyond 60mph, and don't want to get there in a hurry. I thought the Bay was more economical...just
