Cutting out in the rain!?

Hi there i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what i could do or what could be wrong as my van kept cutting out last night? I have 2.1mv petrol injection multivan, 2 weeks ago it went in for a service, and full new exhaust system. Since then the van has run generally a lot smoother.

Last night i took the van out and it ran fine for a few miles, but there was a lot of standing water, anyway it started to splutter and misfire. When you put your foot on the accelerate it would bog and cut out. started it up again and on tick over was ok although revs were very low. After a few minutes it seemed to clear. So i set off again and then it basically died after another couple of miles in fourth. It would just bog down when i tried to accelerate. I looked in the engine bay and it didn't appear soaked, but i sprayed WD40 around the plugs, distributer and on the earth strap. After this it started ok and got me home.

As i haven't had the van long i was just wondering if rain causes anyone else a problem or if i a missing a cover or something to stop water getting up in the engine? If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it.

Hi Vdub89, on reading you post I remembered some else having a similar problem not so long ago. Have a look and see if you might have a similar issues with perishing pipes letting water into the system.

fuel pump soaked ?

After getting off the internet earlier i was thinking, the van was ok in intermittent periods so it couldn't be the fuel because that would be a more continuous problem. So i took the distributor cap off and there was a lot of moisture and corrosion in there. I cleaned all the contacts up and it ran great on the same fuel for over an hour in the end! I guess it was just the poor contact from the moisture and ultimately weak spark which made it run badly!? Oh well touchwood it is running better at the moment, but i guess the true test is if i take it out in the rain again

a dizzy cap should last alot longer than 2 weeks!!! What did the service include? Did they fit it properly??

Hi Em,

It just had a standard service; plugs, oil/ air and fuel fiter along with new fluids. Yer the distributor cap was not new, but i had a look on Just campers last night and they don't seem to expensive so i think i will replace it to be sure

Good move mate. When we do ours, we do plugs, leads and cap and rotor arm together. If they were running ok, they are kept as running get you home spares.
