Webasto heater not working. Please help!

Post by maxstu »

My foolish brother has been living (surviving is more apt) aboard his boat without full heating since Christmas.

He took his diesel fed Webasto HL 32B out to do another immediate task (plug a hole ) and didn't label wires. Then spent a week debilitated due to reoccurring infection and now hasn't clue what goes where!

I managed to download a service manual but it is really all greek to me and my poor brother. And we tried various methods and wiring variations without much success. We got fan spinning in heater but no pump. And round other way etc.

As this equipment is fairly old and expensive we we're keen not to burn out any part. In all there is a thermostat. An on/off switch. A silver box of tricks with three plastic numbered terminal connectors. A pump with diaphram. A cuddly toy . Whoops! Be serious for once  And the heater box itself.

So what we're after is a kindly soul or souls, brimming with sagacity, to take a gander at attached photos and hopefully write a basic, moron friendly list telling us what numbers on the Webasto silver box does what or goes where:

like this for instance;

A1 is live wire to thermostat.
A2 is earth.
--------------------
C3 not required.
C5 is to battery + terminal .............. and so on please.

99 percent of wiring below

Pump and diaphram...with only one wire? Surely not!

Eternal gratitiudes to any replies that may help my brother. How he's survived so far is beyond imagination.

Not your average southern shandy drinking softy me thinks :ok

 No problem.

Just sent email with attatchment.

Went past there earlier today on a mission to retrieve a fallen day mark from up river. Tides were high, a meter above prediction which took them to seven metres! Was lapping over roads and walkways and the river looked very wide! Strood had flood warnings isued and Sheerness Docks were on standby to close flood barriers! Interesting day!

See you soon

Mark

I've got the manual for that model and also have an hl18d the smaller sibling.
You definately need two wires to the pump.
annoyingly the wiring colours are different to mine!Comparing them to the wiring diagram for the 32d they don't appear to be original.
Your main power cables are obviously the hefty ones.According to the wiring diagram the fuel pump should be from the two pin plug ( and it is on mine)Polarity does not matter at the pump. It is difficult to see exactly what has been done with the wiring as there appears to additions to the original!
The thermostat connection should come from the A plug. This may be 2, 3, or 4 wires depending on your system(most probably the wires in the sheath in the coil in your pic)Usually a red and black to start with.
The main heater connection is obviously the C plug.
Honestly the wiring diagram and manual is not much help when you don't have the offending item in front of you.
Hope this helps a little. :D

Hi Oldie,

Every bit helps and thanks for spending your time looking. All goes towards the 'bigger picture' :ok

I've got a wiring diagram too but as you mention some wires are different colours or come from different numbered terminals... obviously wiring gets renewed or changed and thats probably our stumbling block.

Your help is most appreciated 8)

I'm only just across the water from you in Felixstowe pity there is no direct route then I could take a look. I suppose using the boat would be easiest but I don't fancy the trip in this weather we are having!

Yep that looks good from what I can see.
The fuel pump on mine connects to the blue wire and the brown one on the ecu.But your one looks as though it may be the brown and yellow.
I don't know what the green and white striped ones are doing though.
Just had the internet connection drop for half an hour so have been offline.
