1.6gtd golf sb engine wots the diff to a 1.6td.

Post by sharonjpp »

hi all, having no engine in my van at the moment (3 mths now) l have got my hands on a 1.6 gtd, i have stripped it down no visible prob's turbo seems ok having had a 1.6 na diesel in before l have most parts to change over, just a few questions whats the diff between normal turbo and the gtd,is it the charge cooler because i'm lacking 1,plus i'm after a manual haynes or something but can't find 1 that covers the gtd and finally the flywheel is thicker in the gtd then the 1 in 1.6na which 1 do you use, cheers all.

Find a comparable IC to use in your truck. I believe that is the biggest difference between a TD and GTD. If you don't install it with an IC , you will just have to turn down the fueling [don't know if that's actually a verb ] to compensate for the hotter charge. If you can find an IC and find a place to mount it, your face will be sore from the smiles you get from all that new found power. Will be okay without it, depends how you want to drive, etc. but until the fuel is turned down, you will probably have tons of black smoke. Use you original flywheel, but find a tougher clutch disc and stronger pressure plate. The info should all be here or the wiki.

I replaced a 1.6t/d engine in my MK1 caddy with a 1.6GTD golf engine, out of a passat, i ran it without the intercooler with no probs or smoke issues at all. It seemed significantly more powerful but the old engine was knackered, hence the reason for the swap.

the gtd has a water cooled turbo, you will have to deal with that, the flywheel will need changing not forgetting to fit a spigot shaft bearing,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!
