Water tank cap not locking and keys??!

Post by T25Wannabe »

Hi,

New to ownership (89 1.6TD Westfalia) and trying to get a feel for things...

Anyways I have noticed a few oddities which I am trying to work out...

Firstly the water tank cap... it has a key slot and I have a key but it does not appear to do anything? ie I turn the key a half turn but I can still take the water tank cap out?!! Is there a nack to this or something?!

Also keys...

I have:

1 key which is ignition and all doors
1 fuel cap key
1 of the above mentioned water cap key
1 glove compartment key

And I have another key (embossed with a VW logo) but I have no idea what its for? Any ideas?!!

Thanks

the watercap key either locks or unlocks the outer casing so when you have it locked in it will just spin round without engaging the mechanism if that makes sense. may need some wd40 to get it spinning freely
no idea what the vwkey does either- my 3 year old son ribs me about it all the time- "what does that one do daddy?" would almost spoil this running joke if i knew....

Had a problem with mine too. The problem was that the plastic bit the cap locks into did come away from the
van too, instead of staying put for the cap to be secured against. It had to be glued back in and is now safe.
Sounds like this could be your problem?

Put a picture up of the inside of your cap.

:ok

I cannot unlock it to get it off. I haven't used the water tank for over a year now and suddenly find myself needing it. I could unscrew the whole unit and replace. It's the original Autosleeper out and inlet - can I still get these somewhere?
