Audi 5 cylinder diesel
1. where would i get one
2. would itbe easy to fit?
3 any mods needed to fit to existing bus 1.6 d engine...
reason why i ask is we used to have a 5 cylinder petrol passat years ago, and if the diesel engine is anything like the petrol engine i think it would be awesome...

Re: Audi 5 cylinder diesel
Its not worth the cost and hassle for not much more power than a 4 cylinder. it is also heavier and dosent allow a lot of space to work with. But to mention a few negatives .
You are far better with a 4 cylinder diesel.

I agree other than the wonderful sound they are simply not worth the cost/hassle, the 4 cylinders can easily be got to that power with virtually no modsRussel at Syncro-Nutz wrote:Its not worth the cost and hassle for not much more power than a 4 cylinder. it is also heavier and dosent allow a lot of space to work with. If you really really really do have to put yourself through this, just make it properly worht all the grief....make sure you fit the "red eye" engine (codeAEL not AAT) its got 140hp not 115 and bags more torque.Chip it and you have 170hp and similar torque to a S6
I have this engine in an A6 and its bonkers power considering its 50 mpg all the time!

Re: Audi 5 cylinder diesel
my syncro has a 5cyl audi diesel motor fitted, not 100% sure of who did it or why but i've been told its a standard southafrican conversion. no complaints, smooth economical and loads of bottom end grunt, its no flying machine, but its a BRICK!
the history i worked out from investigations was / is body built in germany, syncro conversion in austria, south african motor conversion?? poss done back in germany, and the vehicle was supplied brand new to the swedish forrestry commision.
where it was located and brought to the UK.

South Africa never had any factory fitted diesels only pertrols.
The conversion on your van will be made up of some of the 5 cylinder petrol parts wich are SA specifit.

Ditto.
mTDI it for an almost bolt in conversion with as much power as a 5 pot at a fraction of the cost.
I know how much Mike [thread on Brick-Yard] has spent on parts alone for that thing he built, and for what he has spent you could buy a nice van, that doesn't include his months of fannying about either.

Re: Audi 5 cylinder diesel
and now he's thinking of changing to a four pot PD TDi cos the fuel economy on the five pot isn't exactly great for a daily driver, 25-35mpg depending on wether chargecooler's working and how heavy the right foot. Sure it's got loads of torque and can pull a 4.57 diff and 0.70 fourth gear and big 16" tyres and tow a horsebox loaded but it's not exactly frugal.
Now if someone can get a straightforward decent affordable mTDi set up sorted that does 45 to the gallon then they've a winner, I'm waiting in anticipation for Andrew's
