I just did a trip to tesco down the end of my road were i fill up. Petrol 83.9ppl Derv 95.9ppl
2.1i on petrol costs 15p per mile to run
tdi costs 15p per mile to run
1.6td costs 12p per mile to run
2.1i on lpg costs 10p per mile to run
All worked out on the info on this thread to date at today's fuel prices. On an average mileage of 5000 miles per year the 2.1i would only cost an extra £150 to run. A small price to pay spread out at £2.88 per week for loads more power i recon that you could live with that and don't think a 2.1i is lacking in economy That much compared to the 1.6td. If the 2.1i was gassed you would be £100 a year better off than the 1.6td . The tdi even if you take off the 10% on Slobbos figures at today's fuel price it is the same as a 2.1i on petrol and would cost £250 a year more to run than a 2.1 on gas.
When I looked at this in November, the sunroof was all gunged up with mastic and couldn't be opened.
There is quite a lot of rot which had been filled - not by Les - it looks like it's been there a few years.
The transmission was noisy - sounded like the propshaft joints (metallic ringing), and the lockers were sticking - particularly the rear.
The engine was good though - quite lively.
That said Les is a really nice honest guy and wasn't trying to hide anything - he even picked me up and dropped me back to the station.
As a project, the recent reduction to £1995 was tempting, but I reckon it'd need a couple of K's spending on it to bring it up to scratch.

A 50kW kettle? Must at the least undo the extra capacity of the heavy duity TD cooling system. If the engines still a good'en it deserves to loose that right away.
I would have unbolted it before driving it. I thought the same thing. The engine is a recon, so that might be what killed the first one.
It has been hit in the RH rear quarter quite hard at some point, that's what all the filler is. There is a small bit of damage to the LH A post too. The sliding door has had a stop welded in to stop it going all the way back. Not sure why that is.
Spending 2k on it won't be enough. a gearbox is £600 for starters. That amount of bodywork alone would cost that.
It would be ok for someone that wanted to use it off road & is not bothered about how it looks. I don't fancy fitting a gearbox though, that's a heavy old lump!
Les is a good guy. I think he got caught when he bought this, I don't think he had a good look over it. The price seemed right, but now has come back to haunt him.
