Modified rear lights

Post by kevtherev »

After constructing a prototype and testing it for a while to see if it would "work" in many ways

Image

the final finished lights are being fitted saturday
they are an all LED affair, all that is, except the rear fogs, which are normal bulbs due to the legal requirement.
missing is the reversing lamp. I have separated it out and fitted an auxilliary driving lamp to assist reversing on dark campsites.

Image

made from blank blenders from germany and Hella type lamps from SVC lighting in tamworth
I'll post a pic tomorrow when fitted

Good effort they look the part.
I have seen these on some kit cars and they are good high viz lights.
I can't remember if they have reflectors built in, if not might be wise to have some handy.... Certainly at MOT time.

OK
A small problem...
as you know LED's draw less current than a bulb, so the indicator LED comes with a little gadget that I presume makes the relay think there's a bulb in line.

Image

thing is, there were no instructions on it's position.
I have tried it in line with the +feed, but it still flashes too fast, as if the bulb has gone.

Kev, cant you get a relay specially for led lights, sure I have seen one on-line somewhere.

They look the biz those lights, you should market them.

Simon..
I have checked the Arco website and my little resistor is the one to have
here's the spec

Power rating on std.heatsink 15 watts

Resistance range R005-10K

I wonder if the resistor has to be in parallel?
instead of in series

Don't put the resistor in parallel.
Lecky is a lazy barsteward, it always takes the path of least resistance.
It'll charge down the wire and meet the resistor, go - stuff that I'm off through the LED.
Your LEDs will burn brightly for a short while.

In parallel the resistance across the circuit will be slightly less than the resistance across the LED because there will be two flow paths.
